Ahh, Leslie Gore. Between “You Don’t Own Me” and “It’s My Party,” my girlfriends in choir and I would sing her songs on bus trips to and from competitions (along with ditties by Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, and many other favorites). And this was the late nineties! Gore’s songs have definitely outlived the sixties, and can be found in everything from spoofs (remember Casper?) to theme songs of awesome movies (The First Wives Club).
Her voice is one of those unique, total sixties voices, of course, but those lyrics are pretty memorable—not to mention empowering, if not a bit petulant, which is still fun! “It’s My Party” is one of those songs that most people instantly recognize, and if you’re singing along in the car or on a karaoke machine, you can pretty much pull any of your friends in with you and expect for them to help you out.
Would you cry too, if it happened to you? Leslie certainly seems to think so. Of course, today’s women might simply retaliate by breaking the window in your car or dragging their keys down the side of your pretty little souped up four wheel drive…
